Read Across America Door Decorating Contest
Each year, the students of Haledon Public School compete in a Door Decorating contest based on a favorite book to celebrate Read Across America.
Judges base their evaluations solely on the work that is completed by the students.
In 2011, the students in my third grade class won first place for their creativity and work based on William Steig's book, Brave Irene. Many concepts were studied through the use of this book, including, personification, hyperbole, metaphors, and similes. The students displayed work that concentrated on the author's word choice through the use of strong verbs. Next the students took a word walk through the book and identified a list of strong verbs. To develop word choice skills, the learners then identified a vivid or precise word to research. They then used that word in an original sentence. Finally, the students applied these writing skills to summarize the story into a Beginning, Middle, and End graphic organizer. As a final project, students were able to complete a RAFTS writing assignment to develop a writer's voice and practice with the format of a thank you card. I took the pictures below of our door to showcase their creativity and hard work.
